From 1928 to 1943, almost all German locomotive factories delivered a total of 775 units of this series to the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft. The 1,000 hp locomotives were designed for a speed of 70-80 km/h, which meant that they could also be used on main and feeder lines in addition to their main area of application on the "branch line". At the beginning of the 1950s, 164 class 86 locomotives were still available in the GDR. In 1970, 162 machines were given an EDP-compatible operating number, and they were phased out from 1973.
