From 1971, the German Federal Railroad put 398 series 218 locomotives into service and used them in front of both passenger and freight trains. They are used on most non-electrified routes and can reach a top speed of 140 km/h with an output of 1,840 kW. The 218 series has gone through a number of color variants over the years, and traffic red became the standard color from 1997.
