In 1934, the Deutsche Reichsbahn ordered four C-coupled locomotives from AEG and three from BBC/Kraus Maffei. The AEG locomotives differ visually from the BBC machines in that they have square and flatter front sections, were a little slower but had more power at 725 kW. After delivery, the locomotives were stationed in Munich and Stuttgart. The locomotives ran on the DB in Augsburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Munich and Stuttgart. In 1960/61, the locomotives were extensively modernized and received shunting platforms and additional windows as well as the red paintwork of the DB. From 1976-79 the locomotives renamed BR 163 from 1968 were retired. The last locomotive is number 163 002. E63 01 and E63 02 are still preserved as museum locomotives.
