Starting in 1976, the French State Railways (SNCF) procured a total of 237 BB 7200 general-purpose locomotives for use on the French direct current network. who was responsible for the design of several SNCF locomotives at the time. From 1999, the locomotives were divided into the various business areas and have since been used in a wide variety of train types.
