In 1951, Otto Kässbohrer developed one of the first buses with a self-supporting, inherently stable and sufficiently torsion-resistant body. With this design, a base frame (chassis) could be dispensed with. While other designers of buses with a self-supporting design had not yet made a breakthrough at this point in time, the design of the Setra S 8 laid the foundation for Kässbohrer's subsequent success with the Setra bus brand.
