The Weilburg railway tunnel is 302 meters long and runs parallel to the well-known shipping tunnel. It cuts through the Mühlberg, which means that the railway line does not have to follow the Lahn loop in Weilburg. The railway tunnel was built during the construction of the Lahn Valley Railway from Lahnstein to Wetzlar in 1862 by Italian tunnel construction specialists under the direction of Moritz Hilf (1819 to 1884). Its tunnel portals, designed in a neo-Romantic and neo-Gothic style, are striking. They were designed by the building architect Heinrich Velde (1827 to 1905), who was born in Diez an der Lahn. The north portal has a castle-like double-tower facade, the south portal has stepped gables. (Q: Kuladig.de)
