In 1878, a competition for the design of public lavatories was launched in Berlin and the design by City Planning Director Carl Theodor Rosputt prevailed. It consisted of an octagonal floor plan. There was a privacy screen at the entrance. The material of the then named Café Achteck consisted of cast iron painted green. In 1883 there were already 77 pieces distributed over the city, in 1920 with the formation of Greater Berlin there were 142 Café Achteck.
