The bowgame is a similar sport to skittles, bowling, or boules, for all of which a lot of skillfulness is required. The first records of the game. dated 1331, were found in the Belgian town Liège and it is still played today in the Lower-Rhine Region and parts of the Netherlands, which are close to the border. Today plastic balls are used, but in the past the people played with wooden balls. The balls are moved with wooden rackets across the clay floor towards a metal bow, which is called "Bügel" in German. This is why the game is called "Bügelspiel".
Originally, the bowgame was an amusement for farmers. They usually played the game after threshing the grains on the floor of the farm. In the 18th and 19th century the game alley became part of many rural inns, but after the Second World War skittles became more popular and replaced the traditional bowgame.
