The BB 22200 is a French series of electric locomotives for use both on the SNCF's 1.5 kV electrified direct current network and on the alternating current network electrified with 25 kV 50 Hz. The design of the locomotives with the so-called “nez cassé” (broken nose) comes from the hand of the French Paul Arzens, who was responsible for the design of several SNCF locomotives at the time. Between 1976 and 1986 Alstom built a total of 205 locomotives in six series. Thanks to the multi-system capability and the design as a universal locomotive, the BB 22200 can be used on almost all standard-gauge electrified lines in France in front of freight and passenger trains.
