Diesel multiple unit Class 153 153318 Wessex Trains Pink
The British Rail Class 153 is a single-car diesel multiple unit converted from the British Leyland-built Class 155 two-carriage. The conversion was carried out by Hunslet Barclay at Kilmarnock, and 70 Class 153s were converted from 35 double-car Class 155s. The 153 entered service in 1991 and remains in service to this day, operating on less critical intercity routes and some branch lines, taking on many of the duties previously carried out by the Class 121 and 122. Following the privatisation of BR, the Class 153 fleet was split between many different operators, including East Midlands Trains, London Midland, Wessex Trains (later merged with First Great Western), First North Western (later split between FGW and Northern Rail), Arriva Trains Northern and Anglia Railways. The Class 153 was fitted with the standard BSi auto-coupler and could therefore be used with other classes such as the 156, 158 and Class 170 which had the same coupling mechanism.
