Freight car GPV Gunpowder Van Brocks Fireworks weathered
Gunpowder vans were once a common sight on the railway lines, transporting gunpowder and later other explosives used in mines and quarries. To transport these goods safely, the GPVs were built of steel with wooden reinforcements. Special care was taken to ensure that no iron parts could touch each other and that non-flammable materials were used. Some GPVs had a large red cross on the door to indicate the dangerous nature of the load, and instructions on how to handle them were printed on the inside.
