Diesel multiple unit Class 221 221101 Avanti West Coast 5-car
The Class 221 Super Voyager is a class of diesel-electric tilting multiple unit passenger trainsets built in Bruges, Belgium, by Bombardier Transportation in 2001/02. Similar to the Class 220 Voyager units, the Class 221s are fitted with a tilting mechanism allowing a tilt of up to six degrees to achieve higher speeds on curved tracks. They typically have five carriages and a different bogie design. They have a top speed of 200 km/h (125 mph). Currently, these trains are split between two operators, Avanti West Coast (20 sets) and Cross Country (24 sets). The tilting function on the Cross Country-operated trains was disabled in 2008 to increase reliability and reduce maintenance costs.
