From 1973, 36 locomotives of the 87 series were put into service for operation on the newly electrified northern section of the West Coast Main Line to Glasgow. These locomotives were based on the proven 86 series, featured a modernized design, and produced 5000 hp. The last locomotive built was overhauled to test a new thyristor control system and was numbered 87101.
With the new Mark 3 carriages, the 87 trains became known as the "Electric Scots" and significantly reduced journey times between Euston and Glasgow.
The Class 87 locomotives operated on the front lines for British Rail until 2005, and later for Virgin Trains, when they were replaced by Pendolino electric multiple units. Many locomotives were transferred to other operators or exported.
