The DR procured 709 units of this optimised locomotive, fitted with an electric heating system, from the Voroshilovgrad Locomotive Works in the Soviet Union. The top speed was set at 120 km/h, and the power output of this versatile locomotive was 3,000 hp. Following the merger of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and the Deutsche Bundesbahn to form Deutsche Bahn AG after reunification, the DR diesel locomotives were re-designated with a leading ‘2’ in accordance with the DB series numbering scheme.
